Superhero video games present a unique opportunity for the characters to change their outfits frequently, whether they be old favorites or new looks.

For years, video games based on superhero properties have included switching out the default look for something fresh. These new costumes and armor sets are usually unlocked via gameplay challenges or through DLC content and often represent various periods throughout the hero's career.

Some game titles, however, have taken it a step further and introduced entirely new and original suits for the players to choose from. Some of these looks don't find their way out of the game they originate from, while others make the jump into comics or even animation. Either way, video games are a great place for new superhero costumes to make their debut.

The Batman: Arkham series kicked off in 2009 with Batman: Arkham Asylum, and ended with a bang with 2015's Arkham Knight. The first title saw the iconic hero in a new suit heavily inspired by various classic interpretations and also allowed players to unlock an armored variant for use in Challenge Maps. The regular version also appeared in Injustice: Gods Among Us.

2013's Arkham Origins debuted an earlier version of the suit that went for an all-black color scheme and its DLC campaign, Cold, Cold Heart saw another new armored suit variant appear. Finally, Arkham Knight redesigned the suit for the final time with a design inspired by the then-recent The Dark Knight film trilogy.

2010 saw the release of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, which took a huge risk by dropping the open-world format fans were used to in favor of a linear, level-based progression. The gamble paid off, with many considering it one of the best video game outings for the hero to this day. One huge selling point was the ability to play as four distinct versions of Spider-Man from different corners of the multiverse.

Each Spidey variant in Shattered Dimensions had unique unlockable costumes based on several fan-favorite looks, but each also had its own version of the Captain Universe outfit. The classic 'Amazing' Spider-Man had the original version as seen in the comics, while 'Noir', 'Ultimate', and '2099' all received new and unique takes on the excellent costume.

The Batman: Arkham series gave most of its heroes and villains a fresh look while staying true to what makes each character immediately identifiable. One character to get not one, but two cool new suits was Jason Todd, AKA the Red Hood. Of course, in the 2015 finale, he went by the name of the Arkham Knight.

Appearing as the titular antagonist, Todd's identity was kept as a (rather obvious) mystery under a high-tech suit designed to resemble Batman himself. After completing Arkham Knight's main story, fans could play as Todd across various Challenge Maps in his new Knight suit, or a brand-new take on his Red Hood vigilante costume.

Crystal Dynamics had the huge task of delivering a video game featuring Earth's Mightiest Heroes in the latter part of 2020, and part of that challenge was giving the popular heroes a modern look. Through Marvel's Avengers, each of the playable characters received some new duds in the form of Stark Tech suits of armor to help them tackle the villainous M.O.D.O.K.

Aside from these suits being automatically unlocked for players who progressed through the required missions, there were also a host of other new looks created just for Marvel's Avengers that could be purchased via the in-game store. The options allow no shortage of cool fresh outfits as the Avengers reassembled for this epic adventure.

2013's Injustice: Gods Among Us presented a world where the unthinkable happened; Superman turned to the dark side and ruled the world with an iron fist. Worse still, many other former heroes allied themselves with the Man of Steel, forcing Batman and a rag-tag band of resistance fighters to stand against them.

The cast of this popular fighting game from NetherRealm Studios would enter the arena with striking new looks, such as Superman's regime outfit or Lex Luthor's hulking suit of armor. Some of these new designs would see further evolutions in the 2017 sequel that even allowed players to customize the heroes and villains even futher.

Spider-Man has one of the most iconic outfits in superhero history. More than that, he has several of the most iconic outfits, many of which find their way into his numerous video game outings. In 2018, Insomniac Games introduced a whole new vision for the web-slinger in Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4, and that vision required a new look to go along with it.

The Advanced Suit was crafted in the early part of the story after Peter Parker's usual duds are damaged in a brawl with the Kingpin. This new-yet-familiar design was an instant hit with fans and is now an integral part of this fresh and engaging take on the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

The Advanced Suit was far from the only new costume to debut in the 2018's Spider-Man. Insomniac Games saw fit to throw in a host of new looks to go along with dozens of familiar suits, giving players a total of 42 to pick from in the Remastered editions.

The Velocity Suit, Anti-Ock Suit, Spirit Spider, and Dark Suit among others were all awesome new additions to the costume list in Spider-Man. All the new looks plus the various suit powers allowed players to craft their own ideal combinations to fight crime within New York City.

The mobile game Marvel: Future Revolution, released in 2021, featured multiple versions of classic heroes from across the multiverse. This not only allowed the developers to showcase entirely unique takes on the characters but also allowed players to create their own look for each hero.

It's one thing having brand-new suits for players to choose from, but quite another letting them craft entirely new looks of their own. These looks can be pulled together from the existing suit parts. Some end results can be a little off, but it's entirely possible to create something that feels genuine and authentic to the heroes.

Insomniac Games' follow-up to their 2018 hit landed in 2020, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales told a wonderful stand-alone tale involving the new hero. As expected, Miles would on his own unique suit to contrast Peter's, and this main suit very much resembled his memorable comic book look.

Of course, Spider-Man: Miles Morales would need additional suits to unlock, but the problem was that Miles didn't have anywhere near the number of comic looks as Peter did. That was solved with a bunch of brand-new suits such as the 2020 and 2099 Suits, TRACK outfit, and Crimson Cowl among others. Don't be surprised if any of these appear in comics in the future!

The upcoming game Midnight Suns will bring something entirely new to the Marvel gaming library. Aside from showcasing a unique style of gameplay compared to most superhero romps and boasting an excellent cast of characters, it also rocks a whole new series of suits for the lineup.

Fans will get to check out the likes of Captain America, Blade, Ghost Rider, and plenty more in new mystical get-ups as they battle Lilith as her demonic minions. The imagery of familiar characters debuting such unique looks has really got the fan base eagerly awaiting this new title from the creators of XCOM.
