Governor Mike DeWine (R) toured Ohio’s technical and career centers around Ohio Friday, stopping at Apollo Career Center. He was joined by Ohio Senate President Matt Huffman (R) and Ohio Speaker of the House Bob Cupp (R).

DeWine applauded Apollo's efforts to train students to fill the surplus of jobs that exists in the state, whether that be college or technical school graduates.

"The governor was just here today checking out the things we are doing as a career center for career technical education and how that is feeding into in-demand jobs as well as how we help staff Ohioans with a skilled workforce," said Tara Shepherd, director of adult education at Apollo Career Center. "At the Ohio Technical Center, we do a lot of customized training for General Dynamics and perform assessment testing for all of their welders that actually weld on the tank," Shepherd said. She indicated that a lot of the materials the General Dynamics students learn to weld with are machined right here at Apollo by Apollo students.

In the past three years, over 125 Apollo graduates went on to work at General Dynamics. General Dynamics operates The Joint Systems Manufacturing Center, also known as the Lima Army Tank Plant, building Abrams tanks that contribute to America's national defense.

"General Dynamics has been a great partner, not only to Apollo but to the region for job growth in Ohio," said Shepherd.

"Tyler Lauck is in our CNC Robotics program. CNC Robotics focuses on automation in robotics and machining, so they can be tool and die makers and learn how to run robots and CNC machines. He's also a state officer for Skills USA, a career tech student organization, where each program has a group of students who can compete to show off their technical skills. Tyler is at the top, so he is an officer for Apollo, hence the red blazer," said Shepherd.

"The project that we did for the Governor was the state of Ohio made out of metal. We put a star on top of where Apollo Career Center would be and a star on top of Columbus, just as a gift to the Governor to thank him for coming today," said Lauck, who is a senior at Apollo.

The same day, over 1,500 middle school students from 10 area schools were given the opportunity to see what training and career opportunities Apollo offers as an extension of their high school education. The school districts included Wapakoneta, Shawnee, Bluffton, Perry, Elida, Ada, Spencerville, Allen East, Bath, and Grove.
